Privacy and Data Breaches on Cam Sites
For gay men who aren't out everywhere, a cam account is sensitive data. Two big platforms have exposed user records in the past five years. Here's what happened, and how to set yourself up so a future leak would tell nobody much.
What Has Leaked Before
CAM4, 2020
Security researchers at Safety Detectives found a CAM4 log server open to the internet without a password, with records dating from March 16, 2020. It held about 10.88 billion records, including names, email addresses, country, sexual orientation, chat transcripts and payment logs. Some 11 million records contained email addresses. The server was secured after the researchers alerted the company, which said no personal data was improperly accessed.
Stripchat, 2021
In November 2021, researcher Bob Diachenko of Comparitech found a Stripchat database exposed for about three days. It held around 200 million records, among them roughly 65 million user records with email addresses, usernames, IP addresses and tip balances. Stripchat confirmed the incident and said passwords, payment details and verification documents weren't accessed.
Neither case showed proof of theft. Both show the same thing: the details you give a cam site can end up somewhere you didn't expect.
Five Settings and Habits That Matter Most
- A separate email address. If it leaks, it points to nothing else in your life.
- A username with no link to you. Nothing reused from social media, gaming or work.
- A unique password plus two-step verification. Chaturbate offers two-step verification in its settings; turn it on.
- Fewer profile fields. Orientation, location and birthday are optional on most sites. Leave them blank.
- Tip quietly. Chaturbate's Supporter membership and Stripchat's Ultimate both allow anonymous tips, and Ultimate adds an invisible mode in the viewer list.
Payment Choices
| Method | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Card | A billing-company name on your statement, not the site name, but the site's biller holds your card details |
| Gift card or prepaid voucher | No bank record of the cam purchase |
| Crypto | No card details shared; Chaturbate's minimum is 250 tokens |
| PayPal (where offered) | The purchase moves into your PayPal history instead of your card statement |
On Your Devices
- Use a separate browser profile, or private browsing, for adult sites.
- Check what follow alerts show on your lock screen. Our follow alerts guide explains the settings.
- Don't save cam-site passwords in a browser that others use.
If a Site You Use Is Breached
- Change the password there and anywhere you reused it.
- Turn on two-step verification.
- Be wary of emails mentioning the breach; extortion scams follow big leaks. Don't pay, and don't click links.
- If you're in the EU or UK, you can ask the site what data it holds and request deletion.
Questions
Was CAM4 hacked?
There's no evidence of a hack. A server was left exposed, then secured after researchers reported it.
Does my sexual orientation show on a cam site?
Only if you add it. Leave optional profile fields blank.
Which cam site is most private?
The setup matters more than the site. Separate email, unique password, two-step verification, anonymous tipping and a card-free payment method.
